Residency and citizenship solve different problems — and for Indian nationals, the distinction is decisive.
What residency gives you
The right to live — and depending on the programme, study or work — in another country, while keeping your Indian citizenship.
What citizenship gives you — and costs you
A new nationality and passport. Because India does not allow dual citizenship (Citizenship Act 1955, s.9), it also ends your Indian citizenship. An OCI card offers a lifelong multiple-entry visa for India and parity with NRIs in most economic, financial and educational matters, except the acquisition of agricultural or plantation property.
If your objective can be met by residency, start there.
